How To Generate An App Specific Password for Telstra & Messaging Company Email Accounts

You maybe asked to generate a random password for your mail app on your devices instead of your normal password and many people struggle to do this.

So how and where do you do this from ?

Do it from Webmail → Settings → Accounts → Generate Password.

Here are Step-by-step instructions:

  1. Sign in to Telstra Webmail / Telstra Mail in a browser (your Telstra/BigPond mailbox).

  2. Open Settings then Accounts (or Manage mailboxes). Find the App-specific password / App-specific passwords area and choose Generate Password.

  3. Give it a name (e.g. “iPhone Mail” or “Outlook PC”) so you know what device it’s for, then generate. Telstra will create a random password for that app/device — copy it by clicking in the box that it comes in.

  4. On the device, when your mail client asks for the mailbox password, paste the app-specific password instead of your normal Telstra password. That app now has access but not your main password.

  5. If you want to stop that device’s access later, go back to Webmail → Accounts and revoke/delete the app-specific password you created. That device will be kicked out without changing your main password.

Quick troubleshooting / tips:

  • Copy-paste the generated password (it’s long and random). Don’t try to retype it.

  • If the account still won’t connect, check Telstra’s IMAP/SMTP settings for your mail client and that you used the app password in the client settings (not your Telstra ID password).

  • If you’ve recently changed your Telstra ID/password or are using two-step verification, sign into My Telstra / Telstra ID settings and make sure account details are up to date — sometimes resetting the main password and reissuing app passwords fixes odd login issues.

Steps to Create an App-Specific Password (Messaging Co.)

  1. Open a browser and go to webmail.themessagingco.com.au

  2. Log in using your full email address and your current password.

  3. In Webmail, go to SettingsAccounts.

  4. Under the App-Specific Passwords section, click Generate Password.

  5. When prompted, give the password a label / nickname so you know what device or app it’s for (e.g. “iPhone Mail” / “Outlook PC”)

  6. Click Generate. It will show you a randomly generated password. Copy it immediately. You won’t be able to view that password again later.

  7. Use that generated password in your email app (on your device). In the app, where it asks for your password (for both incoming (IMAP/POP) and outgoing (SMTP) servers), paste the app-specific password instead of your normal account password.

Important Things to Know / Troubleshooting

  • Once you've enabled app-specific passwords, your main password will only work for Webmail. All other email apps must use one of those app-specific ones.

  • If you later lose access or want to block a device, you can revoke (delete) its app-specific password. That device or app then loses access without needing to change your main password.

  • Make sure to update both the incoming and outgoing settings in the mail app using the app-specific password. If you leave one old, mail send or receive may fail.
